CAsToR- DAD Beaver Bulletin
February 24, 2023
Dear readers, we are back!
Our TCORS 2.0 - CAsToR DAD Core created this bulletin to keep you updated on the latest data and resources available through the DAD.
What's new?
Retraction of Strong et al. (2022) paper:

Changes in Tobacco Dependence and Association with Onset and Progression of Use by Product Type from Wave 1 to Wave 3 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study.
Read the full retraction comment here
Authors reported that the retraction was due to the “problematic design of the PATH process for storing data on its dependence measure, specifically scores for dependence on e-cigarettes.”
What does this mean?
PATH’s Tobacco Dependence Index (TDI) consists of a set of questions identifying the degree of tobacco dependence.

These questions are denoted by the lack or presence of an ‘E’ (e.g., R0X_AN0055 / R0X_AN0055E).

Participants might be asked these questions once or twice, depending on the type and products they use.
All tobacco data and some ENDS data will be stored in the mainline (non-E TDI variables), while some ENDS data will be stored in the overflow (E TDI variables).
More details:
When analyzing data of respondents who were asked both sets of questions, using mainline information for ENDS dependence analysis would be incorrect. This is the cause of the error in Strong’s paper (presumably pulling ENDS data from the mainline).
What are the implications for our tobacco dependence score (TDS) variables?
DAD TDS was derived using both E and non-E TDI variables as follows:
  • For single-product users, scores were taken from the only available variable set.
  • For dual and poly users, scores were taken from whichever individual variable (E or non-E) showed greater dependence.
What's next?
To avoid any confusion, the DAD core is currently working on deriving a TDS specific for ENDS users and a separate one for tobacco-product users.
