- The renewed NIH-funded Center for the Assessment of Tobacco Regulations (CAsToR) invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship focused on the impact of tobacco regulations. The postdoctoral research fellow will develop and examine simulation models of tobacco use that explicitly consider multiple tobacco-products and multiple disease outcomes. The interdisciplinary team includes epidemiologists, economists, tobacco scientists, applied mathematicians, and statisticians. The project will conduct analyses of the public health impact of tobacco regulations across a range of tobacco-related conditions and policy outcomes. Desired areas of expertise include: dynamic and complex systems, agent-based modeling, computer programming (familiarity with R, Python, Netlogo), statistical analysis/econometrics, and epidemiology modeling. Experience developing mathematical/simulation models to address problems in public health, epidemiology, or health outcomes is a plus. - Commercial tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) communities, who have the highest smoking rates of any racial/ethnic group in the US. Tobacco simulation models are being used to evaluate the impact of tobacco control policies and guide decision-making, but they have not yet been developed for American Indian populations. There is a need for modeling research that guides policymaking to reduce tobacco use and improve AIAN health outcomes. The Center for the Assessment for Tobacco Regulations (CAsToR) is working in partnership with expert consultants at the Black Hills Center for American Indian Health to meet this need.

- The Tobacco Online Policy Seminar (TOPS) is reviewing abstracts/papers for potential selection for future seminar dates. Researchers of all levels are encouraged to submit their research. Submitted papers should use experimental or quasi-experimental variation (i.e., a well-defined counterfactual) to help guide the development of an effective tobacco policy framework. Please submit your research through the TOPS website submission portal. Please indicate whether your presentation will be a workshop, traditional paper presentation, or research agenda overview presentation (i.e., “grand rounds”).
