Request For Application for Scholarships: Simulation Modeling of Tobacco Use, Health Effects and Policy Impacts (EPID 730) (Scholarships)

The Center for the Assessment of Tobacco Regulations (CAsToR) is offering scholarships for a short course on tobacco simulation modeling (EPID 730: Simulation Modeling of Tobacco Use, Health Effects and Policy Impacts) to be offered online during the University of Michigan Summer Session in Epidemiology (SSE) in July 2026. For those without a modeling background, scholarships are also available for EPID 793: Complex Systems Modeling for Public Health Research (offered two weeks prior to EPID 730), in conjunction with EPID 730 scholarships.

The course will introduce students to the use of simulation modeling to assess the burden of tobacco use on health, and project the impact of tobacco control interventions and regulations on use patterns and downstream health effects. The course will provide an overview of state transition and dynamical system models, their application in public health and policy making, and the use of simulation modeling in tobacco control. Students will learn about the main tobacco simulation models in the literature, become familiar with state transition and dynamical system models, and develop and implement their own smoking simulation models in the R statistical software or Excel. The course will be a combination of lectures by leading experts in the field, modeling lectures, and hands-on lab sessions.

The deadline to apply is April 24, 2026, and applicants are asked to wait to apply to the SSE program until after receiving notification of the scholarship funding decision in May. More information is available here, and the RFA is available here.

Tobacco Regulatory Science Small Grant Program for New Investigators (R03 Clinical Trial Optional) (Request for applications)

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) aims to support new biomedical, behavioral, and social science investigators who are in the early stages of establishing independent careers in tobacco regulatory research. The R03 grant mechanism supports different types of projects, including pilot and feasibility studies, secondary analysis of existing data, small, self-contained research projects, development of research methodology, and development of new research technology. Applicants are encouraged to conduct projects that ultimately have the potential to inform regulations on tobacco product manufacturing, distribution, and marketing. Research projects must address one or more High-Priority Research Topic(s) related to the regulatory authority of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) as mandated by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (FSPTCA), Public Law 111-31. Application due dates: November 18, 2025 and July 14, 2026. Letter of intent due 60 days prior to the application due date.

Training opportunity in tobacco simulation modeling and American Indian and Alaska Native health (Yale School of Public Health)

Commercial tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) communities, who have the highest smoking rates of any racial/ethnic group in the US. Tobacco simulation models are being used to evaluate the impact of tobacco control policies and guide decision-making, but they have not yet been developed for American Indian populations. There is a need for modeling research that guides policymaking to reduce tobacco use and improve AIAN health outcomes. The Center for the Assessment for Tobacco Regulations (CAsToR) is working in partnership with expert consultants at the Black Hills Center for American Indian Health to meet this need.

Consideration for Presentation at a Tobacco Online Policy Seminar, TOPS (Call for papers)

The Tobacco Online Policy Seminar (TOPS) is reviewing abstracts/papers for potential selection for future seminar dates. Researchers of all levels are encouraged to submit their research. Submitted papers should use experimental or quasi-experimental variation (i.e., a well-defined counterfactual) to help guide the development of an effective tobacco policy framework. Please submit your research through the TOPS website submission portal. Please indicate whether your presentation will be a workshop, traditional paper presentation, or research agenda overview presentation (i.e., “grand rounds”).
